My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (Kanye West)

I am currently obsessed with Kanye West's gigantic new masterpiece, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, immediately one of the albums of the year. As Kanye's follow-up to 2007's superb Graduation, and 2008's auto-tune heavy 808's and Heartbreak, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is a sprawling epic collaboration of West's greatest strengths (and various genres) that hits you with a wallop from the very opening. The guest spots, including Raekwon, Kid Cudi, Jay-Z, RZA, Bon Iver and Nicki Minaj, are all wonderful additions, and never overbearing. Sure West has an enormous ego, and his recent antics have befuddled fans, but all the controversy should be forgotten here. The insane sounds are unique throughout, while his savage wordplay is often an honest revelation of his personal insecurities and struggles. This is the redemption album that ultimately proves he is the best rapper alive. Highlights include: Dark Fantasy, All of the Lights (wow), Monster, So Appalled, Hell of a Life and Blame Game.

Here is my amended top 10 of the year:

10. Love Remains - How to Dress Well

9. High Violet - The National

8. Innerspeaker - Tame Impala

7. Halcyon Digest - Deerhunter

6. Sir Luscious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty - Big Boi

5. Before Today - Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti

4. The Age of Adz - Sufjan Stevens

3. The Suburbs - Arcade Fire

2. Teen Dream - Beach House

1. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy - Kanye West
